Top analysts are warning that PresidentTrump risks getting drawn into a forever war, as his options on Iran narrow following his recent flip-flop.
These analysts are arguing that Trump lacks any viable options in a war that is now in its sixth month.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Darryl Cooper, a prominent historian, advised Trump to just admit that the war was a mistake.
Similarly, Professor John Mearsheimer, a popular political scientist, argued that Trump must be willing to admit defeat in Iran and leave.
Mearsheimer argues that Trump has no viable options left after all his attempts to end the war failed.
Trump’s limited options for exiting Iran
On Friday last week, at Camp David, warned that he would launch a major attack against Iran. This time, as he warned a few months ago, he would target Iran’s crucial infrastructural projects like bridges and power plants.
Popular media publications like CBS, The Wall Street Journal, and Axios reported that Trump had authorized the military to launch major attacks against Iran.
Then the plan fell apart. In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed that he had been asked to pause the attacks by Iran itself, and other Gulf allies like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. He noted that the “perimeters of a deal” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz were there.
The truth, however, Iran did not ask for a pause and the two sides were not talking. Instead, Iran published a list of locations it would target if the US went on and launched an attack.
At the same time, these Gulf allies are worried that such attacks will destroy their economies. Besides, they have used most of their defensive munitions during the ongoing war.
All this means that Trump has no easy way out of the Iranian war of choice he started on February 28. If he escalates, Iran will respond by bombing key targets in the region. Most notably, it has more targets than the US has.
It can target oil and gas infrastructure, regional airports, and offices of funds like ADNOC, Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Mubadala. The argument is that these funds invest vast sums of money in the US.
Also, it can attack AI infrastructure and hotels in the region, thus affecting their business models as they work to diversify their businesses from oil.
Admit it was a mistake and leave
Trump’s other choice will be to admit that the war was a mistake and leave the country. One way to achieve that will be to reach another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as he did in June.
The challenge, however, he will need to give Iranians more goodies than in the last MoU. For one, Iranians will ask for their sanctioned money in advance. It will also ask for more guarantees against future attacks.
For Trump, admitting defeat will come at political risks back home. He has already lost the anti-war arm of the Republican party, including popular people like Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Leaving the war without achieving any goals will see him lose the pro-war arm of the Republican Party. And with the midterm elections coming up, this means that Republicans may lose the control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, opening the door for an impeachment. Indeed, the odds that he will be impeached before his term ends have jumped to 64% on Polymarket.
